A few months ago a colleague of mine and I decided to write into a reality make-over show. She was accepted while I graciously accepted the consulation prize of appearing as an interviewee. After a frenetic week of shooting and re-shooting we sat back and waited two months. The show aired this past Sunday evening at 8 pm and after a nervous week of wondering what I was thinking when I agreed to be on TV...my interview was cut! Considering how late in the evening the final interview occurred and the number of cocktails I had prior to filming (only 2 martinis... honestly) ... the editing decision to cut my "sound bite" was probably a very good thing.

Even though I missed my 15 seconds of Style Fame...the experience made me think about all of the struggles I have had trying to pull styles together on a dime. I have done miracles on $50 and a clearance rack!

This has been the inspiration for the August Poor Girl Challenge!
Be proud of your abilities to pull off great fashion without the huge cost!

With only $50 I want you all to pull together a complete outfit. There will be one winner for each of the 6 categories. Each winner will receive a limited edition t-shirt and a guest photo appearance in a special September 2005 posting of Poor Girl's Guide To Living Rich!

3. Cocktails? Ofcourse!
4. Symphony, who me?!
5. Trend-alicious
6. Multi-tasking Weekend

Rules:

• You must purchase all pieces! This is not a DIY challenge (that will be a future challenge-HINT HINT)
• You must accessorize! Atleast one piece of jewelry and a bag of some sort. You can get creative. Think outside the box!
• Thrift stores, re-sale and consignment shops are allowed- get receipts!
• Be creative! No category has it easier or harder than any other... Good Luck!

Submission Guidelines:

• Email photos of yourself in action wearing the ensemble
• Include scanned itemized copies of your receipts totaling $50 or less
• Deadline is August 31!!!
• Due to the receipt of several emails begging me to give you Poor Girl's some more time to get into the swing of things I have decided to give you all an extra month for this first challenge! The new Challenge Deadline is September 30th!!!

Think SALES... Think H&M, TJMaxx, Marshalls, Target, Kmart, Old Navy ... Think about your look in advance and mix and match from different stores!

Today's Tip

Host a Poor Girls' Swap! make a list of friends, neighbors and colleagues whose styles appeal to you. Send an E-vite to these women requesting their presence, a Brunch style food item, and their gently worn clothing items to a fun Sunday Potluck! Be certain that the guests are of similar sizes so that no one misses out on the fun! If sizes vary...try a jewelry or handbag swap!! The items that no one chose? Don't stuff them back into your closet...donate them to a local women's shelter!!!
