Oh for the love of ... Wine!

Who Says They Don't Make Great Wine For Under $10 ?!

Three Recent Finds
August 31, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This came straight through for the latest Bauer Newsletter!

It's always quite satisfying to find a killer bottle of wine priced under $10, and we're always looking for wines that are underpriced and not quite discovered yet. We've just come across 3 great values that probably won't stay at these prices for very long, so we're striking while the fire is hot! We hope you'll find these recent finds as rewarding as we do...

2004 Finca Luzon "Luzon" (Jumilla/Spain)
Do not hesitate to jump on this great Spanish bargain because it just received a 90 Point score from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. 65% Mouvedre and 35% Syrah, this is a big and jammy wine with hints of licorice, creme de cassis, and earthy truffley spices. An incredible concentration of flavor for a $9.00 wine, pair this beauty with lamb sausage or manchega cheese and olives.

Reg: $10.99 On Sale: $8.99 Case: $98.89

2002 Casa Viva Pinot Noir (Chile)
Due to the overwhelming success of the movie Sideways, new Pinot's are popping up everywhere...and as a consumer, you must be wary! Our search for good Pinot Noir took us to Chile, where we discovered the phenomenal Casa Viva. It's everything a good Pinot should be: smooth and silky, with flowery aromas and a good dose of plums and cherries. Serve this as a cocktail red or with smoked salmon as well as lamb kebabs with rice.

Reg: $11.99 On Sale: $9.99 Case: $109.89

2004 Domaine Celestin Blondeau Sauvignon Blanc (Loire/France)
Nothing quenches your thirst better than a nice chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc, especially if it's from the Loire Valley. The flavors are crisp, clean, and refreshing with just the right amount of bite. Blondeau, whose wines we have always loved, has just introduced this Sauvignon Blanc sourced from young Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume vines, and it is, in a word, absolutely delicious. Perfect with a goat cheese salad, fresh local catch, and grilled zucchini.

Reg: $9.99 On Sale: $7.99 Case: $87.89

When in Rome...err Somerville

my new favorite store for crafty goodness!

Now, I am not talking about your grandmother's type of crafty or even that 6th grade summer camp style of crafty. MagPie is what infant crafts dream of growing up to become!

Sleek, polished, quirky, sexy, mysterious, frisky, and sweetly demure with just enough Indie Rock street cred to make it well worth the MBTA adventure.

my new green button earrings were only $8!!! I am now the envy of everyone!

Challenge Deadline Extension

Andy Warhol's 15 seconds of "Reality" TV

A few months ago a colleague of mine and I decided to write into a reality make-over show. She was accepted while I graciously accepted the consulation prize of appearing as an interviewee. After a frenetic week of shooting and re-shooting we sat back and waited two months. The show aired this past Sunday evening at 8 pm and after a nervous week of wondering what I was thinking when I agreed to be on TV...my interview was cut! Considering how late in the evening the final interview occurred and the number of cocktails I had prior to filming (only 2 martinis... honestly) ... the editing decision to cut my "sound bite" was probably a very good thing.

Even though I missed my 15 seconds of Style Fame...the experience made me think about all of the struggles I have had trying to pull styles together on a dime. I have done miracles on $50 and a clearance rack!

This has been the inspiration for the August Poor Girl Challenge!

Be proud of your abilities to pull off great fashion without the huge cost!

With only $50 I want you all to pull together a complete outfit. There will be one winner for each of the 6 categories. Each winner will receive a limited edition t-shirt and a guest photo appearance in a special September 2005 posting of Poor Girl's Guide To Living Rich!

The Categories:

  1. Office "beer at my desk" Casual
  2. Corporate "bored-room" Office
  3. Cocktails? Ofcourse!
  4. Symphony, who me?!
  5. Trend-alicious
  6. Multi-tasking Weekend

Rules:

  • You must purchase all pieces! This is not a DIY challenge (that will be a future challenge-HINT HINT)
  • You must accessorize! Atleast one piece of jewelry and a bag of some sort. You can get creative. Think outside the box!
  • Thrift stores, re-sale and consignment shops are allowed- get receipts!
  • Be creative! No category has it easier or harder than any other... Good Luck!

Submission Guidelines:

  • Email photos of yourself in action wearing the ensemble
  • Include scanned itemized copies of your receipts totaling $50 or less
  • Deadline is August 31!!!
  • Due to the receipt of several emails begging me to give you Poor Girl's some more time to get into the swing of things I have decided to give you all an extra month for this first challenge! The new Challenge Deadline is September 30th!!!

Think SALES... Think H&M, TJMaxx, Marshalls, Target, Kmart, Old Navy ... Think about your look in advance and mix and match from different stores!

Today's Tip

Host a Poor Girls' Swap! make a list of friends, neighbors and colleagues whose styles appeal to you. Send an E-vite to these women requesting their presence, a Brunch style food item, and their gently worn clothing items to a fun Sunday Potluck! Be certain that the guests are of similar sizes so that no one misses out on the fun! If sizes vary...try a jewelry or handbag swap!! The items that no one chose? Don't stuff them back into your closet...donate them to a local women's shelter!!!

Welcome to a new way of life!

Hello and welcome to a new way of life.

What does this mean?

Well, for most of us life has meant a paycheck that comes at noon and by 12:01 is two-thirds gone thanks to mortgage and rental payments, telephone and utility bills, school loans, car payments, and those horrible credit card debts that we work so hard to pay off.

This doesn't leave us much to wiggle around with. Consequently, even though we know that money doesn't buy true happiness, we spend alot of time weary of the paycheck struggle because we feel we can't have that great pair of designer jeans, a gourmet meal, travel to exotic places or even not so exotic places. Our apartments or homes never really come together because that Eames chair is quite frankly out of all of our budgets. This guide is for all of us.

Learn how to find the great deals, throw the swankiest dinner party without the next day financial hangover, create great design in your home without THE names.

But if you really must have those names...
find the best ways to save and invest so that you can get yourself that Eames red plywood lounge chair that we here at THE GUIDE dream about at night!

During the upcoming weeks we will be adding things to the site to help you cope with your desire for more when you have less. You can still have quality even without the price tag. Stay tuned and we at The Poor Girl's Guide will show you how exactly to "Live Rich".

  • Food
  • Fashion
  • Travel
  • Design
  • Decor
  • Shopping
  • Saving
  • Investing

all this and more!

If you have questions or want a particular question answered please comment and we will get back with you as soon as we can!

Thanks again.... and welcome to the New Way of Life!
